Purpose of Evaluation
Purpose of Evaluation
1) College and university admissions: To determine whether an applicant meets the educational requirements for admission to a college or university in the United States.
2) Employment: To assess the qualifications of job applicants who have completed their education in other countries, and to determine whether they meet the requirements for certain positions.
3) Professional licensing: To assess the qualifications of individuals who have completed their education in other countries and are seeking professional licensing or certification in the United States.
4) Immigration: To determine whether an individual’s education meets the requirements for certain immigration benefits, such as employment-based visas.
5) Other purposes: Evaluations of foreign education credentials may also be required for other purposes, such as scholarship applications or participation in exchange programs.
The type of Evaluation Report and required documents depend on the exact purpose of the Evaluation. It is always recommended to get the requirements in a written form from the intended recipient before applying for evaluation.
If the requirements do not state in the explicit form that Document-by-Document or Course-By-Course Evaluation is necessary, it is always best to apply for a Course-by-Course Evaluation (the most comprehensive report).
Admissions processes and requirements may vary from institution to institution. Contact the admissions office of your chosen institution for instructions. Some educational institutions evaluate foreign credentials themselves, others will refer you to a credential evaluation service, such as Globe Language Services.
An equivalent of a US High School Diploma is generally required for admission into undergraduate programs and an equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree is required for admission into graduate programs (Master’s and Doctorate).
Diploma/ degree (aka, “general” or “document-by-document”) evaluation reports are used to apply for college admission, while Course-by-course (aka, “detailed” or “transcript”) evaluation reports are used for admission and the awarding of transfer credit. If you have completed university-level study outside the United States, please choose the Course-by-Course Evaluation (Transcript Evaluation).
Our Evaluation Reports will show your employer what your degrees are equal to in the United States. Most employers just need a Diploma/ Degree Evaluation (aka, Document-by-Document).
Some employers, however, may also wish to see your coursework and would require a Course-by-Course evaluation.
Verifying educational qualifications should be an integral part of every employee’s background check. This process is more imperative when the increased competition can lead to candidates inflating their academic credentials.
Verification of degrees can be a time-consuming process as most of the records are on paper, but it benefits the company in the long run.
Evaluations of foreign education credentials are used for immigration purposes to determine whether an individual’s education meets the requirements for certain immigration benefits, such as employment-based visas.
Evaluations for Immigration Purposes:
Ethnolinks has successfully completed more than 20,000 evaluations for USCIS purposes.
Evaluations may be used for H1-B, EB-3, TN and I-140 visas.
Degree Evaluations:
These degrees show the US equivalency of each foreign qualification, indicate the field of study, show that the university study is “post-secondary” (as per USCIS requirements) and note that the school is an accredited institution of higher education.
Work Experience Evaluations:
Education and work experience are combined to show equivalency to a US bachelor’s degree (Three for One rule) or Master’s Degree (5 Year Rule).
RFE Responses:
Received an RFE? Not to worry. Just send us the RFE and we’ll let you know how we can help.
Many licensing boards will require an evaluation of study you have completed outside the United States. Among these are Teaching, Cosmetology, Social Work, Accounting and Acupuncture.
Licensing agencies ussually provide the exact checklist of documents you will need to provide to them in order to obtain a license. In some cases additional non-academic studies need to be evaluated together with academic degrees. Some licensing agencies in addition to Evaluation will also require translations of all documents that are not in English.
Please check with your licensing board for exact requirements.
Ethnolinks confirms the authenticity of foreign academic degrees and determines whether they are equal to a US High School Diploma. These evaluations can be used for admission to cosmetology programs and to apply for a cosmetology license, in accordance with state requirements.
Ethno evaluations are widely accepted for federal, state and local civil service positions. Be sure to include your social security number on your application since it is always required for public employment.
Civil service law requires that candidates for most New York City jobs take and pass an exam before they can be hired. These exams test individuals on the skills and abilities that they need to do the job. Exams are administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). The Notice of Examination (NOE) for each exam lists the qualifications for the position, the types of tests required (written, practical, and/or physical) and the date(s) of the test. New York City posts an annual schedule of exams every July for titles for which City agencies seek to hire. Applicants can apply and pay for exams online, and can take an exam either online or at a community-based test center.
